What is the role of a City Council Representative?

A city council representative serves as a spokesperson for the community, facilitates communication and understanding between elected and appointed officials, assists the council in setting goals and advocating policy decisions, and serves as a promoter and defender of the community.  The city council representative is a key political leader and policy developer.  The city council representative is responsible for soliciting citizen views in forming these policies and interpreting them to the public.  Additionally,   the city council representative serves as a key representative in intergovernmental relations.

What are your top three priorities for the City of Cape Coral?

  1. Renewing trust in the city council by respecting and celebrating different points of view.

  2. Maintaining a fiscally responsible budget.

  3. Supervising the City Manager                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                             Why?

  1. The local government acts as the voice of the people.  If elected officials are to truly be effective, we must have the trust of the citizens.  My goal is to work hard enough so that our residents truly believe that I am acting, at all times, in their best interest.  I will always do my homework and be prepared.  I will hold myself accountable to you for all my actions.
  2. We have a beautiful city.  We have a safe city.  We have one of, if not the best, water systems not only in the State but in the world. We must make sure that we adequately fund all aspects of our city while constantly looking to control the overall cost to the taxpayer.
  3. We operate through a council-manager form of government.  Thus the city manager is tasked with running the City on a day to day basis.  The city  council is tasked with ensuring that we have the best person for the job and that they are carrying out the directives of  the governing body.

What are the current pressing issues facing the City of  Cape Coral

1.  Taking action on the compensation for all council members.

2.  Ensuring that the residents have input on all areas within our purview.

3.  Proactive and intelligent planning for the continual growth of the city.

4.  Monitoring the UEP and our water quality, as well as air quality.

5.  Adopting a Fiscally Responsible Budget.

How does the city council representative legislate with our form of government?

The city of Cape Coral utilizes the council–manager form of government.  That means that the entire council has equal responsibility and is  responsible for the legislative function of the City.  Specifically we are tasked with establishing policy, passing local ordinances, and developing an overall vision.  The City manager is tasked with running the day to day business of the City.  As your city council representative I will work closely with the City manager but not interfere with the daily operations of their staff members. As a city council representative,  I am an ambassador for our City and will seek to form relationships with everyone to let them know how truly spectacular our City is.
